Three Wheeled Buggies
Three-wheeled buggies are great for walking around the neighborhood or jogging. Their compact design makes it easy to maneuver even in tight places.
For a smooth ride, opt for a pram with air-filled tyres and look for models with a 360deg front swivel wheel. They are susceptible, however to punctures. Make sure you have an emergency repair kit.
Frame made of sturdy material
Recent figures have been released revealing that the three-wheeled vehicle - that noughties symbol of more money than sanity is on the verge of disappearing. They've been replaced with four-wheelers that can handle a wider range of terrain, yet still look stylish and easy to push.
The basic principle is that the larger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with bumpy and rough pavements. With larger wheels front and back makes it easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy on a newborn baby and a 3-year-old child and found it to be extremely robust. It handled grass, cobbles and rough pavements, as well as dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said that "it is sturdy to push and very solid when you're on rough terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable and require occasionally pumping) come with suspension built-in that was very comfortable for my children.
The size and shape of the seat is another thing to consider. You want the seat to be big enough to allow your child to be comfortable and allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat, which allows the child to face you, while other buggies only allow a parent-facing one.
The Roma Atlas is a great alternative for off-road or walking in muddy areas. The buggy can be used as a one-person unit from birth, and then expands to take two children when your family expands. It is suitable for toddlers and infants from birth to age 4. It includes a bumper, raincover, an improved 5-point harness, and a big padded seat. The storage options are great as well, with a large basket, zip pockets inside the hood, and an easy-to-access pouch on the rear of the seat unit.
Larger wheels
Larger wheels mean that your buggy will be more stable on uneven terrain, which is ideal for off-road buggies. Additionally, they make it easier to manoeuvre the buggy through tight spaces. Some three-wheeled buggies come with rotating wheels at the front to help you navigate tight corners. Others are designed to run and have fixed wheels that lock for increased speed and stability. This is also helpful in the event that you hit the roots of a tree or stray road, as the front wheel will rise up slightly to prevent you from hitting it.
A lot of 3 wheel pushchairs have air filled tyres which means they can handle a variety of terrains and are more adaptable than 4-wheelers. They're also lighter. However, they are prone to punctures and you'll need to have an repair kit, spare inner tube and pump handy.
Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and Venicci Carbo lux are some of our favourite 3-wheelers. These buggies, as per MFM's Kath, have larger wheels which she claims "perform well on grass, gravel roads and market town cobbles", and can easily go up or down kerbs. They also have a suspension system which in her words "smoothes out bumps with great efficiency".
Buggies with bigger wheels can be quite wide and can be difficult to fit in tight spaces. This can be an issue especially if you're using it to a jogger or you need to be able to get through doors that are narrow when out and about. Most models come with small folding options that let you remove the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.
Easy to Manoeuvre
A three-wheel buggy can be easier to maneuver with a child. The way they are built ensures that the front wheels turn on a dime and are extremely easy to maneuver which makes them perfect for tricky terrain such as parks, cobbles or bumpy pavements, as well as dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried out a three-wheeler with her newborn and toddler and stated: "The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough ground and the swivel front wheel particularly useful. I was also amazed by the way it handled kerbs when using the hand-operated break. It was very stable for descending or on uneven terrain."
The only drawback to this amazing maneuverability is that the 3 wheel buggy's larger wheels do sometimes mean it has to struggle in tight spaces, something to keep in mind if you live in a city area. If this is a problem then a four-wheeled buggy might be the better option for you.
